14) JESUS PREPARES FOR
THE MINISTRY
15) JOHN PREPARES THE
PEOPLE
Mark 1:1-2
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God;
2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold,
I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before
thee.
Luke 1:80
80 And the child John grew, and waxed strong
in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
Luke 3:1-6 (See also
Matthew 3:1-3; Mark 1:2-4)
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign
of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod
being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and
of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests,
the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3 And he came into all the country about Jordan,
preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 As it is written in the book of the words
of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every
mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of
God.
Matthew 3:4-10 (See
also Mark 1:5-6; Luke 3:7-9)
4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's
hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and
wild honey.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all
Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing
their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees
and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers,
who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves,
We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of
these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root
of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit
is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Luke 3:10-18 (See also
Matt. 3:11-12; Mark 1:7-8)
10 And the people asked him, saying, What
shall we do then?
11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that
hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath
meat, let him do likewise.
12 Then came also publicans to be baptized,
and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than
that which is appointed you.
14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him,
saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no
man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 And as the people were in expectation,
and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ,
or not;
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I
indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet
of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the
Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly
purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff
he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 And many other things in his exhortation
preached he unto the people.
16) JESUS BAPTIZED,
GOES INTO THE WILDERNESS
Matthew 3:13-17 (See
also Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-23)
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to
Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need
to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer
it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then
he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up
straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon
him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This
is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 4:1-11 (See
also Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13)
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit
into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty
nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said,
If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy
city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of
God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge
concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any
time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again,
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding
high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory
of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will
I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence,
Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him
only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold,
angels came and ministered unto him.
17) JOHN TESTIFIES OF
JESUS
John 1:19-34
19 And this is the record of John, when
the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed,
I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou
Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered,
No.
22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou?
that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in
the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet
Esaias.
24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, and said unto him,
Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither
that prophet?
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with
water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred
before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond
Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming
unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin
of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh
a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should
be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the
Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me
to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see
the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth
with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is
the Son of God.
