MIGRANT STUDENTS SET
EXAMPLE OF EXCELLENCE
Teachers, principals and counselors helped identify 243 migrant youths to be featured in Washington State Exemplary Migrant Students 2002.
"Even though these students have migrated from school to school, they have found ways to engage in their communities and participate in school/community activities," compilers wrote in the forward.
"These future leaders of our state and your community … represent our richest human resource," the forward continues. "These 243 students are positive, productive role models who have earned our respect."
Below is only a small sampling of the honored students.
Juan Arias, 3.33 GPA, 2002 Graduate
East Valley School District
A long-term goal that I have is to go to college. I believe that accomplishing it would open many doors for me in the future, and the thought motivates me a lot.
I see it as the key to some of my other goals, like finding a job that I will enjoy and keep me financially stable. Once I have that, I can concentrate on having a family and, hopefully, living a happy life.
Throughout high school, I have tried to be as involved as possible, both in my community and school.
In school I have been a part of varsity soccer for four years and have participated in both cross country and football.
I am also a part of the CIA Club. I have been a part of the Big Buddy program at the Moxee Elementary School.
I have a couple of things that I consider some of my talents. One is my soccer ability. Thanks to it, I have traveled to many places such as Florida, New Mexico, California, Washington D.C., Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
Another one would be my writing. I enjoy writing poetry whenever I feel the need to express myself without words, or just to get things off my mind.
Gerardo Garcia, 3.73 GPA, 10th Grade
Grandview School District
My goal is to graduate from High School. After high school, I would like to study to become a private investigator or a policeman, if my parents can pay for my college or if I can win scholarships.
I need to improve my English skills in order to communicate better. I need to continue to improve my grades.
I have good study skills, good research skills, and I work well with others.
Maria Alvarez, 3.61 GPA, 10th Grade
Yakima School District
My long-term goals are graduating from high school and going to college. I would also like to study nursing, and if I like it, try to … become a doctor. Another goal I have is getting a good job to help my family with bills.
I have overcome many obstacles since I've been living here in the U.S. One was learning to speak English when I had just come from Mexico.
I overcame the fear of not being accepted in schools just because I was Hispanic. I have also overcome the obstacle of people who thought and said I wasn't smart enough to be a good student.
Olga Solano, 3.22 GPA, 12th Grade
Lynden School District
My first goal is to learn better English. My other important goal is to graduate from Lynden High School and go to college…. I want to be successful in my life.
When I first came to the United States from Mexico, I didn't know any English. Now that I know some, I am proud of myself. I still need to study more and learn to improve my English.
Erick Alonso Alfaro, 3.71 GPA, 2002 Graduate
Yakima School District
My long-term goal when I finish high school is to graduate from a university with a Ph.D. in mathematics. Once I'm prepared, I would like to help the "Raza Migrant" find better jobs and receive higher education.
I've had the opportunity to organize and speak in front of college/university conferences, such as the 5th Annual CASHE Conference at W.S.U., the ACE Conference at the University of Washington, and the M.E.Ch.A. Regional Conference at W.S.U.
Recently, I've been selected to participate in the M.E.Ch.A. National Conference in Houston, Texas. I am also involved in ASB Leadership, M.E.Ch.A., Community Service, BRAVO (after school) Program, and in AP Classes.
Elvia Zavala-Suarez, 3.21 GPA, 2002 Graduate
Nooksack Valley School District
My long-term goal is to become a stockbroker. I interviewed a stockbroker, and he let me see the positive and negative ends of having a job where you invest money for people. I got interested and took accounting courses and personal financing classes…. Another long-term goal is to become a history teacher.
I [did] a lot of work during my senior year. I was a Camp Casey Counselor. I volunteered for a school program of outdoor education for sixth-graders. I participated in Adopt-A-Highway Program. I'm also involved in a program called "Entreprep."
A shared talent of mine is creating tattoo designs. I like to draw Chinese Calligraphy, Old English letters, and all types of tribal armbands and designs that have images of the sun and flames. I am doing tattoos as a topic for my senior project. I plan to get my license when I turn 18, so I can have a part-time job to pay my way through college.
Laura Astudillo, 3.77 GPA, 12th Grade
Pasco School District
My long-term goal is to finish high school, try to go to a good college and finish my career in computer engineering, have a nice family where I can grow even more as a person and a woman, and be all the things I can be in life.
We (the migrants) should do the best to accomplish the so-called "American Dream" and really have, or do, something to be proud of.
My most important obstacle that I overcame is the change in language and the change from one country to another.
It is difficult to do something where nobody knows you, and you don't know anybody. Even now, I still have difficulties with my writing. You never adapt to this new place, and you always remember your native country.
I'm in a dance group called "Recuerdos de Mi Tierra," in which I was last year's president. The group basically does Mexican dancing and is for people to know about our traditions.
Gabriel Abarca, 3.01 GPA, 12th Grade
Lynden School District
My long-term goal is to … get an education to have a good job. I want to go into the Army. Once I accomplish my goals, I want to get married, have a family of my own, and buy a house in the country.
The obstacle that I [had to] overcome is that I could not talk to anyone about my feelings. I've always had a fear about expressing my feelings and having people laugh at me. At this point I have built up my self-confidence, and now I am able to express myself with a good friend or teacher.
My shared talent is that I'm a great soccer player.
Lizbeth Cuevas, 3.61 GPA, 12th Grade
Vancouver School District
When I came to America, my goal was to get an education and become a professional. I worked hard, and after only a few years I have been able to learn a new language and culture.
I have also learned that getting a higher education is not so easy, especially for Hispanics. I want to be a lawyer.
One of the most difficult obstacles I had was the language. It was very hard for me to understand my teachers and subjects. Thanks to the ESL program, I have learned a lot. One obstacle I'm most worried about is finances. I don't have the economic resources to afford a university education. My only hope is to get a scholarship so I can continue studying.
I am a member of the International Club. I am also a participant in the Mexican Folkloric Ballet, which performs Mexican regional dances on a volunteer basis for different organizations. I also translate for new Hispanic students… in my community who do not speak English. I have cared for children as a volunteer at Parent/Teacher conferences.
Annabell Gonzalez, 3.58 GPA, 2002 Graduate
Othello School District
I plan to go to a community college for two years to do my basic classes. I then would transfer to a four-year university to study physical therapy.
There have been so many things that I have had to overcome. I used to believe there was a conspiracy against me so I wouldn't go to college. Keeping my grades up with all the activities I am involved in was very hard. Being the first-born in my family with an overprotective dad who didn't want his "little girl" to leave was one of the biggest.
I have been involved with Key Club, Drama, Speech, SAFETY, SADD, and Honor Society. I volunteer at our convalescent center, Boys and Girls Club, local food bank, and the library summer reading program. I am my church's youth group treasurer and a math tutor for College-Bound.
Vianey Medel, 3.4 GPA, 12th Grade
Moses Lake School District
My long-term goal is to become a doctor or a lawyer because I like science
and history. I have a strong desire to help people less fortunate than myself. I
would like to be a doctor because I want to save lives and also help the poor.
And someday I would like to find the cure for AIDS.
Obstacles
My main obstacle is the lack of economic resources. My family doesn't have
money to pay for my education. I'm going to graduate in the year 2003, and I
need all the help I can get.
Community/School Involvement
I'm involved in Key Club (community service), M.E.Ch.A. Club, Pep Club, Science Olympiad, and I am a member of the Math Team at Moses Lake High School.
Yanet Juarez, 3.39 GPA, 11th Grade
Centralia School District
My long-term goal is to make something of myself. I want to graduate with a 3.8 GPA or higher. I also want to be a better soccer and volleyball player.
I want to make my parents proud of my success. My goal is also to become a lawyer when I grow up. I want to defend what is right. I also want to help other students who have problems.
I have been through many obstacles in my life. I had a very hard time learning and understanding English, but now I speak it well. I also had a hard time accepting myself as me, but now I have confidence and pride in myself.
In school I am in several activities. I am president of the French Club and class representative for our marketing class. I am in DECA. I’d like to start a soccer team in Centralia. I'm also very involved in my church youth group.
Pilar Flores Martinez, 3.0 GPA, 12th Grade
Centralia School District
My dream and goal is to be a good person, have a career and a degree in engineering or in computer science, and to learn English so I can help others who come to this country.
It's also important for me to be respectful and friendly to those around me. There are many who have a dream and a goal like I do, and we can all realize them.
I have had many obstacles in my life. The first one was when I wanted to continue attending schools but I didn't have money for the tuition; so I worked, and not in just one job, but in many jobs.
Thanks to those jobs, I learned a lot of things that are useful to me now that I am in this country.
When I was in school in Mexico, I liked to participate in sports like basketball and football (soccer). Even though some people said that soccer was a sport for boys, I didn't care, and I participated in that sport. Now, I would like to continue doing sports in this school and meet other people so they can help me and I can help them.
David Zepeda, 3.77 GPA, 12th Grade
Eastmont School District
My long-term goal is to finish high school and possibly go to the University of Washington. I would like to get educated in the field of drafting and architecture, preferably in the area of large steel structures or home buildings.
I want to learn more math, science and physics. Another idea for my future is learning Japanese, and maybe a few more languages. I would like to spend two years in a Japanese high school and go to the University of Tokyo.
I have shown leadership skills in the past and present. …When many students couldn't understand the math we were doing, and the teacher couldn't help them, I was able to help a group of students understand. I am doing the same thing this year in a Japanese class.
Mario Gonzalez, 3.4 GPA, 12th Grade
Pasco School District
My long-term goal is to finish high school, go to college and get my bachelor’s degree in the field of civil engineering. I would also like to start my own business, and some day play soccer professionally.
This is in addition to my goal of being a civil engineer. I am currently taking a computer engineering class and receiving a B+, so I will continue to go to advanced computer engineering. At the end of my senior year, I will take the certification test and get my license in computer engineering.
I have overcome many obstacles in my time. I have moved a lot, which has affected my learning, but I try hard and accomplish what I want.
I requested to get out of ESL classes, and, with my grades being good, they accepted. I am doing really good in my new classes.
I have many talents and qualifications, and I like all subjects, but I am more into sports and science. I have played soccer since my freshman year and am really good. I just received a letter to join an exchange student program to play soccer.
Gerardo Ruelas, 3.68 GPA, 12th Grade
Sunnyside School District
The most important goals in my life are to study and to help my family. I want to go to college to become a computer programmer.
After that, I will get a historian degree. I like to study history because I like to know about the people of the past — their beliefs, legends, myths and all about their culture. I want to go to college to help them get a better life. My ambition is not the money, but to help those who need it.
The biggest obstacle I have faced recently is the English. I arrived in the United States two years ago. I didn't know a word of English. I was in the ESL program for one year and three months. Then I was transferred to a language arts class. Now I am in a regular English class, and English is not an obstacle anymore.
I am the historian for the second time in M.E.Ch.A. Club in Sunnyside. I was the first person to write articles in English and Spanish in the school newspaper. I also took pictures for the yearbook.
Laura Covarrubias, 3.34 GPA, Graduate
Wenatchee School District
Kids are the key to success in society, which is why I would like to become a teacher or a pediatrician. I would also like to specialize in working with abused children by helping them overcome their horrible experiences.
I participated in Special Olympics in Wenatchee as a member of the First Aid group, Kids First, and Panteras Unidas. I have helped in daycare and also given out yellow ribbons to support the United States Army at war.
Maria Barragan, 3.74 GPA, Senior
Mount Vernon School District
My long-term goal is to get my master’s degree in teaching. I would like to teach kindergarten, first or second grade. Helping young children is something that I really love to do.
One of the obstacles I have overcome in my life has been learning English
when I was in elementary school. My mom is a single mother raising four
children. I help my mom out by baby-sitting my three younger siblings.
Jorge Rios, 3.61 GPA, Senior
Quincy School District
I am interested in working with computers and in the medical field. I plan to work in a company where I will have the opportunity to work as a computer programmer. I think it will satisfy my financial needs if I work hard.
It was hard for me when I entered Quincy High School and started learning how to read, write, and speak English. I think one of the hardest obstacles was when the teacher explained, in front of the class, that I didn't understand anything because I didn't understand any English.
